FAQs - Hello Physio
If you’re new to physio or just want to understand how things work, you’re in the right place. We’ve put together simple answers to the most common questions our clients ask – If you can’t find what you’re looking for, just give us a call. We’re here to help every step of the way.
Do I need a referral to see a physiotherapist?
No – you can book directly with us without a referral. We are called primary care for this reason.
A referral is only required if you’re using a GP Chronic Condition Management Plan (GPCCMP, formerly EPC/CDM), WorkCover, DVA or NDIS – please bring your paperwork.
How does Medicare work with physiotherapy under a GPCCMP (formerly EPC)?
If your GP has provided a valid GP Chronic Condition Management Plan (GPCCMP) referral, Medicare subsidises up to 5 allied-health sessions per calendar year total. This includes physiotherapy, exercise physiology, psychology, podiatry and other eligible allied-health services.
Those 5 sessions are shared across all allied-health disciplines – not per discipline.
Once you use those 5 sessions (regardless of which service), any additional sessions in that year will not be subsidised by Medicare.
You are still welcome to continue with more sessions after that – they just will be at full private cost (or claimable via private health insurance if eligible).
– So it’s best to treat the Medicare rebate as a useful discount – especially for your initial care – and budget accordingly if ongoing treatment is likely needed.
How much does a physio appointment cost?
Our fees are designed to be clear and competitive. For reference, standards set by The Australian Physiotherapy Association start at $260/hour, but many practices charge less or more depending on experience and services included. Our current rates are:
-
Initial consultation: $127
-
Follow-up sessions: $110
-
Special rates for seniors: $105 (initial) / $95 (follow-up)
If you have private health insurance, DVA, NDIS or another rebate source, that can reduce your out-of-pocket costs. If you’re unsure, feel free to call us – we’ll help you estimate your cost before treatment.
Do you accept private health insurance / HICAPS?
Yes – we accept most major private health funds (e.g. Bupa, Medibank, HCF, AHM, NIB). Payment is easy with on-the-spot rebate via HICAPS.
How many physiotherapy sessions will I need?
This depends on your condition, how long you’ve had it, and your recovery goals. Some people feel improvement after 1–2 sessions, while others may need ongoing treatment over several weeks or months.
We’ll assess your needs at the first consultation and provide a tailored treatment plan. We’ll also give you home exercises so recovery continues between visits.
What should I wear to my appointment?
Wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothes (activewear, shorts, T-shirts) that allow easy movement. If we need to assess or treat a particular area (like your shoulder, back or knee), we may ask you to expose that area – so wear or bring clothing that makes this easy.

Your first visit
- We take a full history of your issue
- We conduct a physical assessment (posture, movement, strength, flexibility, pain triggers)
Explain your diagnosis
Give you a clear plan
Start treatment
Provide 1–2 simple exercises to take home to support recovery
You’ll leave knowing exactly what’s going on – and what steps you need to take next.
Your first 3–4 sessions
We focus on reducing pain and getting you moving again using a combination of:
Soft-tissue work
Massage
Gentle mobility
Early strengthening
The next phase (3–12 weeks)
Once pain improves, we gradually build your strength and confidence.
This phase depends on your goals and what you want to get back to (e.g. work duties, gym training, sport, lifting your kids, gardening or being pain-free in daily life).
What we don’t do
❌ No leaving you alone on machines
❌ No unsupervised gym time
❌ No treating multiple patients at once
Every session is 1:1 and tailored for you.
At-home support
We keep your exercises simple: just 1–2 effective movements.
We can also give you a take-home exercise app so you know exactly what to do.
